I think I remember seeing this photo in a book called Great American Amusement Parks. It's a pretty neat book that has a lot of old amusement park photos along with some 'newer' ones from the 70s, when the book came out.

I've done reports on these and let me tell you - they're definitely not safe.
Notice the people watching the ride. This ride gained more spectators than riders because, obviously, going upside down at the time was a big deal. But there's another reason that people wouldn't ride it - because it snapped people's necks. Most people got off with just minor neck injuries, but many people broke their necks or severely injured them because of the G-Forces and inadequate scientific research that was in the ride. That's why people say Corkscrew at Knott's was the first upside-down coaster, and Revolution at Magic Mountain was the first looping coaster. This one doesn't count because it was so dangerous.
So to follow up Josh, it was badass, but not safe.

I used to get that book from the library all the time when I was a kid. Even though it was outdated even then (early 90's) I still liked seeing old pictures of some parks I had been to like Hershey and all the old rides in the early 1900's.

So this is where Arrow Dynamics got there ideas from!
Funny thing is, the transitions and smoothness on this was probably 20x better than that of GASM!

If you'll notice, this ride's loop is circular,as opposed to tear-drop shaped as most modern(including Arrow) coasters are.
By the way,I believe the pictured coaster was called "The Flip-Flap"
