From Theme Park Review

Hey everyone!

I work as a mechanic for great adventure. Right now, we are in the process of completely retracking Rolling Thunder. The updated ride will be much smoother. We purchased 4 new PTC trains. Each has 2 lapbars per row (sorry) but no seatbelts. The skids will now be magnetic brakes.

Sounds good right?

Whether this is true or not, we'll probably get the official word from the park soon enough.

This would be very good. I think if this is true which we can't tell yet, but if it is, this might get rolling thunders popularity back. Also lines would move faster then with the buzz bars.

It seems a little fishy, but I guess we'll see what happens next season.

retracking = good
PTC individual lapbars = horrible

overall: Id prefer it like it is now those PTC individual lapbars are so awkward and uncomfortable

While I hope this is true, I find it hard to believe there won't be seatbelts. PTC considers the seatbelt to be the primary restraint on their trains with the lap bar being secondary and with rumors that PTC refuses to service the trains from Knoebels who wouldn't add seatbelts to Phoenix and Twister, I can't imagine Six Flags not having the seatbelts on the trains.

With the buzzbars and seatbelts, loading has been horrible for the ride where a line in the station can take 20 minutes (I know it isn't the ride ops fault since they have to check to make sure each buzzbar is lowered then check the seatbelts). I guess this also means 2 trains can run in the rain now on each side.

I'll be riding the coaster a lot more each season now.

^ The "No seatbelts" thing kind of gave me a red flag in my mind too.

As much as Rolling Thunder needs a rehab, this rumor sounds almost too good to be true. Magnetic brakes? New trains? Re-tracking? That sounds like an addition that we would get in one year. As much as I want it to be true, I would really have to see it to believe.

I really, really, really hope this is true. Rolling Thunder is pretty fun as it is, except for the fact that riding it once is like a 20 minute commitment. With magnetic brakes, things will be much easier, and if it's retracked, that'll be great! The ride actually has a decent amount of airtime.

This seems a little off to me. There's two major things that seem off to me, no seat belts and 4 new trains. I would expect them to rehab the trains, and just put individual restraints on, rather than spending all that extra money. Plus, why would they take off seat belts, when they already have them?

If they do re-track it, I would only expect one side open for the year. Half the year will probably be the left, and the other the right. There's not enough time to re-track it all over the off-season in my opinion.

Hopefully this rumor is true, Rolling Thunder could use some TLC. +1 to Great Adventure if they really do change the break system. :)

Alright, I'm gonna play a little devil's advocate here: I personally like the retracking, I feel it is well needed, the brakes are extremely needed, and I feel the PTC are really needed. Yes, PTC individuals are very awkward and tight, but the trains could use a little TLC. Plus, we could see what we have dreamed, seeing Rolling Thunder run backwards again. American Eagle at SFGAm recently ran one of their sides in reverse, and I believe they have a newer(isn) version of the PTC trains. If there is a successful rehab for Rolling Thunder, we could see the newer trains run backwards. I'm not exactly sure if the current trains could run backwards, but I'm almost positive the newer trains can operate in reverse.
